Book#1: Æther Shadow Nearly finished.

cropped-wordpress.png

I can honestly say that after four years Book#1: ÆtherShadow is nearing completion. While I still have mixed feeling about it (it was the first one I wrote, but the second to be released) I can’t find anything else wrong with the book itself. There is still some formatting bugs to be cured and some issues concerning #Scrivener, but I will be glad to move on to the next books.

#NaNoWriMo is rapidly approaching and this year I will use it as an excuse to avoid #Dragon World:Exiles and work on the rewrite of joint books #Kitsune and #Shelly Lee which are the next in the story line and show the main characters taking separate paths.

I am still holding hope that it will be finished in time for All Hallows Eve, but one can never be certain.

Well, thats all for now,
See you in port next time Lords, Ladies and Airship Captains.

NaNoWriMo, I quit!

Yep you heard me, I quit NaNoWriMo 2014!
I didn’t really have any interest in it this year due to trying to get a prequel/fluff/background book out and now its out I have bugs in it that need fixing (thank god for ebooks).

My Finale Word count is at 16733 and I can’t be bother to write any more.

Do I have writers block? – No!
Have I written myself into a hole? – Nope!
Work? – Nope.
Family? – Nope again.

In the end I just can’t be bothered as I need to fix this and get two more manuscripts finished. Just to much of a back log to sort out.

How do I go about writing a series?

I meet up with Lois of http://loiselden.com and started sharing experiences about writing. One of the things that came up was “How do you go about writing a series?”

The Diaries of James Purcell (Book #0 – The End, is coming soon) and is planned for nine book over three trilogies but, how do I find the inspiration to write the series? The analogy I used was “A series is like a tree growing. As you start writing, the story grows on its own and will split and grow branches.

This has left me with a minor issue with the series I have started writing the first of a side series called “Valkyries – The Lady Death.” The Valkyries series follows the female main characters as they o about there lives outside of the main series. so far the first few of the series previously held the title of Æther tempest (a trilogy) but the title never felt right.

The current plans for the Valkyrie series is a follows.

v#1 – The Lady Death
v#2 – Captain Lee
v#3 – The Elf Captain
v#4 – McClays Tempest.

The Lady death while starting as a NaNoWriMo project starts in T.D.J.P – BOOK #0 – The End and will parallel the main James Purcell cycle while the other 3 fit between the two trilogies that make up the James Purcell cycle.

But, I’ve wondered off subject here. The ideas for these books started as chapters and paragraphs in the main stories but as questions started to rise, notes and background fluff started to be generated. These “Fluff” text soon start to take on their own life and demand attention. It is this point that the branches grow to their own branches and eventually enough notes exist that you have another book.

(I really hope that helps)

She also asked me the following: When writing a sequel how do you avoid reproducing chunks of the previous books in the fear the readers will have question about because they didn’t read the first?

There are many ways to answer this.

1, The Prologue. I once read that a prologue is not often read because it usually doesn’t contain much that adds to the story. To me, this feels like the ideal place to recap the previous book.
2, Flash backs. Characters will always drift of and remember or day dream about previous events.
3, Hints and subtle clues. If you want to avoid the recaps and memories then another option is to just drop hints to the past events. assuming that the reader doesn’t expect everything to be reproduced then (I hope) that these hints will be enough to make readers thing, “Oh I’ve missed a book here and ned to read the previous one.”

I apologise if this is hard to understand but I do tend to confuse explanations at times but, the other reason is that I have “Man Flu” (ROFL) and feel drained from not much sleep.
If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask them.

B.T.W once I have finished the ebook I will move on to P.O.D publishing via amazons createspace so expect a writeup of that soon.

See you in port next time Airship Captains and Words Scribes!

NaNoWriMo 2014, The Story that never was supposed to start!

NaNoWriMo 2014, The Story that never was supposed to start!

I have thought long and hard over Joining NaNoWriMo this year and I have to say that I have given in and posted up my entry.

Like most stories, I had never even thought about this but the idea is running away and a character that was killed in the beginning of book #0 The End (hopefully coming out for haloween) is having her own novel. My novel called “The Lady Death” follows James fiancee Eleanor Theologian as she faces death and the fact that she can never be with him again no matter how many time he may die.

This book will involve spoilers concerning the nine book’s that make up the main stream of “The Diaries of James Purcell” so will probably not see the light of day until I finish the series (well not unless I cave under pressure of readers who want to know more.

CampNaNoWriMo Update?

I thought I should write a post about how far along I am in the beta version of the book.

Using the Nanocounter my official word count (actual document word count) is sitting around 32,660 however, in the process of writing and the little distractions, I have written another 6K words on top of that! My original target word count for the first part of book one came in at 29K and 15 chapters (not to far short) and while there are still loads to do on it, I hope that the finial pre-publish will pass 30K.

Part 2-Second life MKII is only up to 3.5K, but I hope to get up to the 6K mark by drink o’clock (1759 According to Arthur Guinness)

I am at the point in the manuscript that I have an idea of where it’s going, but no notes on what to write.

I say this far too many times, but I am still amazed that a 2.2k word Halloween short has blown into a book series as more and more readers ask me questions.

I have a private hidden group on facebook where a few have had the chance to preview the first 14 chapters, but until the first part get epublished it will remain secret.

NaNoCamp is around the corner.

NaNoCamp is around the corner and I contemplated not taking part as I have 3 books to edit already but boredom is getting the better of me. I have loads of plots and story’s covering several genera’s but lacking in the attention to concentrate on them.

These are the idea’s

Rise of the Gray Wolf.

The Dragon Rider.

Now able to use magic in a form better suited to his ability’s, Mac and Louise return across the worlds of England and Albion in search of people from there past. Can they make a new life for them or will they become part of the coming war.

The Moon Druid.
Media Studies Student Jessica has always known there is something special about her. Plagued with a strange illness that causes her to go from a complete lack of energy one day to being like a hyperactive child another day. She is drawn to a stranger who walks into the shop she works in, he has an alternative motive and has tried to hide from the world for his crimes.
What is the connection between them and can she find out the answer to her illness.

Iconian the Meddler.
For over two hundred years the dragons have remained hidden from the world but when his mate leave for self imposed exile even is love for the queen cannot hold him back. Will he finds his partner and discover what she has been doing in the absence.

Oh dear, such choices.

I’m going to University!

I’m going to University!

Well, not quite, I have signed up for the Open University – Start Writing Fiction course. This is the first course that I have attempted since I finished my beginners Japanese course with a pas rate of 92%. I am filled with mixed emotions of both fear and joy but with having several NaNoWriMo friend living geographically near also signed up, I am sure we will all be successful.

What about the books?

I am still struggling to get the first part of book 1 finished and this part alone is a shy under 20K words and its still waiting for one chapter to be finished and one to be written! I may post this up as a freebie to judge the demand for my book series while I work on getting the rest of book one edited.

So far the response has been wonderful, thanks everyone for fighting your way through the rough drafts!

Contact me?

I have been slowly building up the contacts sites but so far the graphical side has bee getting to me.
This blog is the primary contact site for me so far but I do have a G+ Page which is written by the good Captain himself, You can follow him @James Purcell
If it works, you can sometime follow me with this hash tag – #JamesPurcell
Twitter – Absolutely not, I am afraid I don’t abide twitter.
Facebook – I am waiting on pay day to get some bits and then I will hopefully get a proper photo of the good captain to start using as profile pictures. However, until then, there is no facebook page.

What else?

Due to work, there hasn’t been much progress on the revolvers.
I have also taken part in the Brass Goggles Community Writing project, but have pulled out of the Homestart Writing competition. I just feel that my piece didn’t have enough to it.
If there are any artist out there who feel inspired to make up some artwork, feel free but contact me with links to artwork using the DeviantArt website via the member ajb-2k3.

Well that is all for now, see you in port soon, airship captains.

1870’s Arrest, Trial and execution.

1870’s Arrest, Trial and execution.

So this is proving more difficult then I expected, while there is lots of information on people being executed by hanging for various crimes, trying to find transcripts of the events from arrest to hanging is proving difficult. While there are transcripts that do exist from this time, there is very little available online to read.

I have paid a visit to my local library to raid there offerings and have a few books to hand but it will still take time. Transcripts from the time do exist but most are kept hidden away in archives. I am starting to question why I am doing all this research and it falls down to one thing, I want part of my book to feel realistic even if it is Victorian fantasy!

Delving into history can be interesting at times and you can discover some interesting things about places that you may have been without giving a thought to. One of these places is an old stone building behind wooden hoarding near the engine shed in Bristol. This structure s the last remaining building of Bristol’s new Gaol which was closed in the 1870’s. This last building was (according to research) the site of the last public hanging in Bristol but it just sits there now falling apart.

I hate to see places like this going to waste and wish I could win the Lottery just to rebuild them, even if they have a grisly past.

Currently my book sits at 58,460 words and growing all the time. I am only 48 pages in on the first edit and still adding in paragraphs that I have been told that I need. Once I finish this pass, will see if I can find some to cast there eyes over it and point out anything that they think is wrong on missing.

Well that is enough thinking for now,

See you in port next time Airship Pilots!

2013 – A Year in review.

I started this year with 30,000 words written for a book and a deadline for a writing story competition and finished it by:

  • Finishing the first draft of that book up to 50K Words
  • Writing a second during NaNoCamp @ 40K Words
  • Wrote a third for NaNoWriMo and having it up to 53K Words
  • Book four = 15K Words
  • Two side books contain notes and basic planning.
  • Two shorts entered into the short story competition and unsuccessful,
  • Three more shorts written,
  • One short for the 2014 written but may pull out this year.
  • And one more for a Forum communal writing project that doesn’t seam to be getting worked on.

On top of that what else?

I went to London to celebrate the Chinese new year.

Been to Scotland to visit Edinburgh Castle.

Became an uncle.

Learned how to sail a van and drive on an ice slope!

But one thing I didn’t do was to go on a Holiday. It’s quite amazing how stress relieving, getting away for a while is.

I seeing in the new year feeling rotten but before I go I will say.

All your budding artist and writers make sure you get your hands on a copy of Writers and artist year book 2014 if you intend to get anything published in the new year.
